Overview

Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are ground-dwelling lizards native to the arid regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. They are one of the easiest reptiles to care for and come in a stunning variety of color morphs.

Personality & Qualities

Leopard geckos are calm, gentle, and rarely bite. They are crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) and known for their endearing 'smiling' expression. They become very comfortable with regular handling.

Daily Care

Offer fresh insects dusted with calcium/D3. Provide fresh water. Spot-clean substrate. Mist the humid hide to maintain moisture for shedding. Monitor temperatures daily.

Diet

Feed gut-loaded insects: crickets, mealworms, dubia roaches, and occasional waxworms as treats. Dust with calcium powder every feeding and vitamin D3 supplement 2-3 times per week. Juveniles eat daily; adults every other day.

Housing Requirements

A 20-gallon long tank for one adult. Provide a warm hide, cool hide, and humid hide (for shedding). Use paper towels, tile, or reptile carpet as substrate. Under-tank heater on one side with thermostat.

Temperature & Humidity

Warm side floor: 88-92°F (achieved with under-tank heater). Cool side: 75-80°F. Ambient air temperature: 75-85°F. Humidity: 30-40% ambient, 70% in humid hide.

Common Mistakes

Using loose sand substrate (impaction risk), relying on overhead heat only (they need belly heat), not providing a humid hide, using colored/nighttime bulbs (disrupts sleep cycle), and cohabiting multiple geckos.

Vet Care Recommendations

Annual wellness checks. Watch for signs of metabolic bone disease, stuck shed, parasites, and cryptosporidiosis. A fecal exam within the first month of ownership is recommended.

Things to Know Before Buying

Leopard geckos can live 20+ years—be ready for a long commitment. Initial setup costs are moderate ($100-200). They are insectivores, so you need to be comfortable handling live insects. They are an excellent first reptile!

Legal & Responsibility Disclaimer

Leopard geckos are legal throughout the United States. Owners are responsible for providing proper husbandry, nutrition, and veterinary care.
