Overview
Chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) are native to the Andes Mountains of South America. They are prized for their ultra-soft fur and lively, entertaining behavior. Chinchillas are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk) and can live 15+ years with proper care, making them a long-term commitment.
Personality & Qualities
Chinchillas are energetic, curious, and playful. They can become very affectionate with their owners but generally prefer not to be held for long periods. They are intelligent and enjoy exploring. Each chinchilla has its own unique personality.
Daily Care
Provide fresh timothy hay daily (unlimited), fresh water, and a small amount of chinchilla pellets. Spot-clean the cage daily. Offer a dust bath 2–3 times per week (never use water to bathe them). Allow out-of-cage playtime in a safe, chinchilla-proofed room.
Diet
The main diet should be unlimited timothy hay and high-quality chinchilla pellets. Fresh water must always be available. Treats should be minimal—small amounts of dried rose hips or plain Cheerios. Avoid sugary fruits, nuts, and seeds which can cause digestive issues.
Housing Requirements
A multi-level wire cage with solid flooring or fleece-covered shelves (wire floors hurt their feet). Minimum size 3x2x2 ft, larger is better. Include wooden ledges, hideaways, and a solid exercise wheel. Keep in a cool room—chinchillas are highly sensitive to heat above 75°F.
Temperature & Humidity
Temperature: 60–70°F ideal, never above 75°F. Chinchillas can die from heat stroke quickly. Humidity should be kept low (30–50%). Never place the cage in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
Common Mistakes
Bathing in water (causes fur rot and illness), housing in temperatures above 75°F, feeding sugary treats, using a wire-floor cage without protection, and not providing dust baths regularly.
Vet Care Recommendations
Find an exotic vet experienced with small mammals. Annual wellness checks recommended. Watch for dental malocclusion (very common), GI stasis, and respiratory infections.
Things to Know Before Buying
Chinchillas live 15+ years and require consistent daily care. They are not ideal for young children as they dislike being restrained. Budget for proper cage setup, dust bath supplies, and exotic vet care.
Legal & Responsibility Disclaimer
Chinchillas are legal in most US states. Owners are fully responsible for proper housing, diet, and veterinary care. NJ Exotic Pets is not liable for health issues from improper care.
