Overview

Coatimundis (Nasua nasua), also called coatis, are members of the raccoon family native to Central and South America. They are highly intelligent, incredibly active, and require experienced owners. In the wild they live in large social groups, which means pet coatis need extensive socialization and enrichment.

Personality & Qualities

Coatis are bold, curious, and very intelligent — which also makes them destructive and mischievous. They bond strongly with their owners when hand-raised but can be unpredictable. They use their long, flexible snout to explore everything and require constant mental stimulation.

Daily Care

Feed twice daily with a varied diet. Provide fresh water always. Spend several hours daily in supervised interaction. Provide extensive enrichment — foraging activities, climbing structures. Spot-clean enclosure daily, deep clean weekly.

Diet

Varied omnivore diet: cooked lean meats, eggs, fresh fruits, vegetables, insects, and mealworms. Avoid processed foods, high-sodium items, and cat/dog food as a primary diet. Variety is essential to prevent nutritional deficiencies.

Housing Requirements

A very large, secure outdoor/indoor enclosure with climbing structures, digging areas, and enrichment. Minimum 6x8x6 ft — larger is always better. They are escape artists and require very secure enclosures. Indoor free-roam requires extensive coati-proofing.

Temperature & Humidity

Prefer temperatures of 65–85°F. They are sensitive to cold and should have heated shelter in winter. Native to tropical/subtropical environments.

Common Mistakes

Underestimating their destructive capability, not providing sufficient enrichment, inadequate enclosure security, improper diet, and purchasing without verifying legality.

Vet Care Recommendations

Requires an exotic vet with experience in procyonids. Annual wellness exams, vaccinations, and dental checks. Spay/neuter recommended. Watch for obesity, dental disease, and parasites.

Things to Know Before Buying

Coatis are legal in only a few states — verify your local laws first. They require years of experience with exotic animals, extremely secure housing, and a very significant time commitment. NOT a pet for beginners.

Legal & Responsibility Disclaimer

Coatimundis are restricted or illegal in many US states. Buyers must verify local and state laws before purchase. NJ Exotic Pets is not liable for legal issues or health problems from improper care.
