Overview

Dwarf hamsters include several species: Roborovski (the smallest and fastest), Campbell's, Winter White, and Chinese hamsters. They are smaller and faster than Syrian hamsters and may be slightly more challenging to handle. Some species can be housed in same-sex pairs when introduced correctly.

Personality & Qualities

Dwarf hamsters are energetic, quick, and entertaining to watch. Roborovskis are the fastest and least handleable. Campbell's and Winter Whites can become tame with patient handling. All are active, curious, and fun to observe doing natural behaviors.

Daily Care

Fresh food and water daily. Spot-clean soiled areas frequently. Full cage clean every 1–2 weeks. Gentle, patient daily handling to build trust. Provide ample enrichment — they are very active animals.

Diet

High-quality dwarf hamster or hamster seed mix. Supplement with small amounts of fresh vegetables and occasional protein. Avoid sugary foods — dwarf hamsters are prone to diabetes. Fresh water always available.

Housing Requirements

Same minimum as Syrian hamsters — 450 sq in floor space. Deep paper-based substrate for burrowing (6–8 inches). Solid-surface wheel sized appropriately (6.5–8 inches). Multiple hides and enrichment items.

Temperature & Humidity

65–75°F. Sensitive to cold (can enter torpor) and heat (can suffer heat stroke above 80°F). Keep in stable room temperature environment.

Common Mistakes

Too-small enclosure, inadequate wheel size, insufficient substrate, housing incompatible species or sexes together, and using a wire wheel.

Vet Care Recommendations

Exotic vet with small rodent experience. Watch for wet tail, dental issues, diabetes (especially in Campbell's), and tumors. Annual checkups recommended.

Things to Know Before Buying

Dwarf hamsters are fast and can be harder to handle than Syrians, especially for young children. Research the specific species before buying as care needs vary slightly between types.
