Overview
Kinkajous (Potos flavus) are nocturnal rainforest mammals native to Central and South America. They are members of the raccoon family and are known for their prehensile tail, which they use to grip branches. They can live 20–25 years in captivity, making them an enormous long-term commitment. Kinkajous are intelligent, playful, and can bond very strongly with their owners, but they require extensive experience, time, and specialized care.
Personality & Qualities
Kinkajous are curious, playful, and affectionate when properly bonded. However they can be unpredictable — even tame kinkajous may bite or scratch without warning, especially when startled or tired. They are NOT recommended for beginners or households with small children.
Daily Care
Feed in the evening (nocturnal). Refresh water. Provide enrichment and interaction. Clean enclosure regularly. Monitor for signs of illness — kinkajous can hide symptoms.
Diet
Kinkajous are primarily frugivores. Offer a variety of fresh fruits (mango, papaya, melon, grapes, bananas), honey, yogurt, and occasional insects. A commercially available exotic carnivore diet can supplement. ❌ AVOID: avocado, onions, garlic, chocolate, caffeine, high-fat processed foods.
Housing Requirements
Kinkajous need a very large, tall enclosure — minimum 4x4x6 ft — filled with climbing structures, ropes, branches, and enrichment. They are arboreal and spend most of their time elevated. Daily supervised free-roam in a kinkajou-proofed room is essential.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain temperatures between 70°F–85°F. They are tropical animals and do not tolerate cold. Humidity should be kept between 50%–70%. A humidifier may be necessary in drier climates.
Common Mistakes
Underestimating the time and space commitment. Not verifying legality in your state. Inadequate enclosure size. Improper diet. Not providing enough enrichment and interaction.
