Overview
Sailfin Dragons (Hydrosaurus pustulatus) are large, impressive lizards native to the Philippines. They are named for the dramatic sail-like crest running along their back and tail, used for thermoregulation and display. Adult males can reach 3–4 feet in length. They are semi-aquatic and excellent swimmers. Sailfin dragons are recommended for experienced reptile keepers due to their large size, specialized humidity and temperature needs, and semi-aquatic requirements.
Personality & Qualities
Sailfin dragons can be flighty and defensive when young but many become quite tame with consistent, patient handling. They are alert, intelligent, and interactive. Their dramatic appearance makes them one of the most impressive lizards in the hobby.
Daily Care
Maintain basking and ambient temperatures. Mist enclosure 2x daily. Refresh water in the swimming area. Feed appropriately for age. Spot-clean enclosure. UVB bulbs must be replaced every 6 months.
Diet
Juveniles: primarily insects (dubia roaches, crickets, hornworms) dusted with calcium and D3. Adults: more plant material — leafy greens, squash, sweet potato — plus insects and occasional protein. All insects should be dusted with calcium + D3 supplements. Feed juveniles daily; adults every other day. ❌ AVOID: fireflies, wild-caught insects, avocado, high-oxalate greens (spinach, beet greens).
Housing Requirements
Adults require a very large enclosure — minimum 6x3x6 ft — with a large water feature (pool or trough) for swimming. Provide sturdy climbing branches, basking spots, and dense foliage. Enclosure must be very tall as they are arboreal. Custom-built enclosures are typically necessary.
Temperature & Humidity
Basking spot: 100°F–110°F. Ambient temperature: 82°F–88°F. Nighttime drop to 70°F–75°F is acceptable. UVB lighting (10.0 or equivalent) is essential. Humidity: 70%–90%. A large water basin and regular misting are necessary. They must have access to a swimming area at all times.
Common Mistakes
Enclosure too small. No swimming area. Insufficient humidity. Inadequate UVB lighting. Not feeding enough variety. Handling too aggressively before the animal is tame.
