Overview
Veiled Chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) are one of the most visually dramatic reptiles available in the hobby. Native to Yemen and Saudi Arabia, they are named for the distinctive casque (crest) on top of their head. They can change color based on mood, temperature, and health status. Veiled chameleons are arboreal, sensitive to their environment, and require precise husbandry. They are recommended for experienced reptile keepers and are primarily display animals rather than handling pets.
Personality & Qualities
Veiled chameleons are primarily display animals. While some individuals tolerate handling, many remain defensive and stressed by frequent contact. They communicate stress through dark colors and gaping. Observe and appreciate them — excessive handling shortens their lifespan. Males are generally more tolerant than females.
Daily Care
Mist enclosure 2–3 times daily for drinking and humidity. Monitor basking and ambient temperatures. Feed appropriately. Replace water in the dripper. Spot-clean enclosure. Observe animal for signs of stress or illness.
Diet
Feed primarily gut-loaded insects: crickets, dubia roaches, hornworms, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae. All insects must be dusted with calcium (without D3) at every feeding, and calcium WITH D3 + multivitamin 2x per month. Feed juveniles daily; adults every other day. Remove uneaten insects after feeding. ❌ AVOID: fireflies, wild-caught insects, waxworms as a staple (too fatty), mealworms as a staple.
Housing Requirements
Adults require a minimum 24x24x48 inch SCREEN enclosure (not glass — ventilation is critical). Provide live or high-quality artificial plants for coverage, horizontal and vertical branches for climbing, and a drip/misting system. Chameleons must not see their own reflection — cover three sides of the enclosure.
Temperature & Humidity
Basking spot: 85°F–95°F. Ambient temperature: 72°F–80°F. Nighttime drop to 65°F–70°F is beneficial. UVB lighting (T5 HO 5.0 or equivalent) is ESSENTIAL. Replace UVB bulbs every 6 months. Humidity: 50%–70% with spikes to 100% during misting. Mist 2–3 times daily. Chameleons drink only from droplets on leaves — they will not drink from a standing water dish.
Common Mistakes
Glass enclosure (insufficient ventilation). No misting system (dehydration). Inadequate UVB. Over-handling causing chronic stress. Housing two chameleons together. Insufficient supplementation. Not gut-loading feeder insects.
Vet Care Recommendations
NJ Exotic Pets recommends Paws, Wings & Scales — Christopher F. Stancel, DVM. 125 Paterson Ave, Suite 1, Little Falls, NJ 07424. Phone: (973) 638-1180. Regular exotic reptile vet care is essential — chameleons mask illness until critically sick.
Things to Know Before Buying
Veiled chameleons are NOT beginner reptiles. They require screen enclosures, precise temperature gradients, UVB lighting, a misting system, and careful dietary supplementation. They are sensitive to stress and improper husbandry leads to rapid health decline. They are best treated as display animals.
