Overview
Gargoyle Geckos (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) are a medium-sized arboreal gecko species native to New Caledonia. They are named for their bumpy, horn-like head knobs that resemble gargoyle statues. Gargoyle geckos are known for being hardier and generally calmer than crested geckos, and they have the unique ability to regenerate their tail if lost. They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. With proper care they can live 15–20 years and make excellent pets for beginners and experienced keepers alike.
Personality & Qualities
Gargoyle geckos are generally calmer and less jumpy than crested geckos, making them excellent handling geckos. They move more slowly and deliberately. They may nip if startled but rarely break skin. With regular handling they become very tame and tolerant.
Daily Care
Mist once or twice daily. Refresh CGD every other day (remove uneaten food within 24 hours). Offer insects 2x per week. Spot-clean substrate. Handle gently in the evening when most active.
Diet
Crested/Gargoyle Gecko Diet (CGD) such as Repashy or Pangea is the dietary staple — offered every other day. Supplement with live insects (dubia roaches, crickets) 2x per week dusted with calcium and vitamin powder. Fresh fruit can be offered occasionally as a treat. Gargoyle geckos tend to be more insect-enthusiastic than crested geckos. ❌ AVOID: fireflies, wild-caught insects, citrus fruits.
Housing Requirements
Adults require a minimum 18x18x24 inch tall (arboreal) enclosure. Provide live or artificial plants, cork bark hides, and horizontal/vertical branches. Partial mesh enclosures provide good ventilation. Substrate options include coconut fiber, peat moss, or bioactive soil.
Temperature & Humidity
Temperature: 72°F–78°F during the day; can drop to 65°F–68°F at night. Do NOT exceed 85°F — heat stress is dangerous. Humidity: 60%–80%. Mist the enclosure once or twice daily to provide drinking water and maintain humidity. Allow it to dry out slightly between mistings.
Common Mistakes
Temperatures too high. Not misting enough. Housing two males together. Leaving uneaten CGD too long. Not providing enough climbing structure.

Things to Know Before Buying
Gargoyle geckos are nocturnal and most active in the evening. They are sensitive to high heat. Their tail CAN regenerate if dropped, unlike crested geckos. A 15–20 year lifespan is a significant commitment.
