Overview
Crested Geckos (Correlophus ciliatus) are a popular arboreal gecko species native to New Caledonia. Once thought extinct, they were rediscovered in 1994 and have since become one of the most widely kept reptiles in the hobby. They are known for being docile, tolerant of handling, and relatively easy to care for — making them an excellent choice for beginners. They are available in a huge variety of color morphs and patterns. Crested geckos can live 15–20 years in captivity.
Personality & Qualities
Crested geckos are calm, slow-moving, and generally very tolerant of handling. They are fast when startled — always handle over a low, soft surface. They may drop their tail if severely stressed (it does NOT grow back in this species). With regular gentle handling they become very tame and are a joy to interact with.
Daily Care
Mist enclosure once or twice daily. Refresh CGD every other day. Offer dusted insects 2x per week. Spot-clean substrate. Handle gently in the evening when most active.
Diet
Crested Gecko Diet (CGD) such as Repashy or Pangea should be the dietary staple — offered every other day in a small dish. Supplement with live insects (dubia roaches, crickets) 2x per week, dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements. Fresh fruit can be offered occasionally as a treat. ❌ AVOID: fireflies, wild-caught insects, citrus fruits. Remove uneaten CGD within 24 hours.
Housing Requirements
Adults require a minimum 20-gallon tall (arboreal) enclosure. Juveniles can start in smaller setups and be upgraded as they grow. Provide live or artificial plants for coverage, cork bark hides, and climbing branches. Mesh or partially mesh enclosures help with ventilation. Do not use glass tanks without ventilation.
Temperature & Humidity
Temperature: 72°F–78°F during the day; can drop to 65°F at night. Crested geckos do NOT tolerate temperatures above 85°F — this is critical. Humidity: 60%–80%. Mist the enclosure once or twice daily to maintain humidity and provide drinking water. Allow to partially dry between mistings.
Common Mistakes
Temperatures too high (above 85°F). Not misting enough. Leaving uneaten CGD in the enclosure too long. Housing two males together. Handling too soon after bringing home. Glass enclosure with poor ventilation.

Things to Know Before Buying
Crested geckos are nocturnal and most active in the evening. They are very sensitive to heat above 85°F — air conditioning is a must in warm climates. They are a 15–20 year commitment. Dropped tails do not regenerate.
