Overview

The Panther Chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) 'Positive Crimson' is a locale-influenced color morph known for its intense crimson, red, and orange coloration in males. Native to Madagascar, Panther Chameleons are among the most vividly colored reptiles in the world. Males display spectacular coloration especially when stimulated. Panther Chameleons are sensitive animals that require precise environmental conditions and are best suited for experienced reptile keepers. With proper care they live 3–7 years.

Personality & Qualities

Panther Chameleons are display animals more than handling pets. Males are territorial and stressed by excessive handling. They are best appreciated visually. Some individuals tolerate brief handling but most prefer to be observed. Their color-changing ability is genuinely spectacular.

Daily Care

Mist 2–3 times daily. Gut-load and dust feeder insects. Monitor temperatures and humidity. Check hydration (urate should be white, not orange). Observe color and behavior daily as chameleons hide illness well.

Diet

Panther Chameleons require live insects: • Staple: dubia roaches, crickets, hornworms • Treats: waxworms, silkworms, blue bottle flies All insects must be gut-loaded 24 hours before feeding. Dust with calcium (no D3) at every feeding and calcium with D3 + multivitamin twice monthly. Feed juveniles daily; adults every other day. ❌ AVOID: wild-caught insects, fireflies, toxic plants.

Housing Requirements

Adults require a minimum 24x24x48 inch screened enclosure — full screen allows optimal airflow, which is critical. Chameleons CANNOT be kept in glass tanks. Provide live pothos, ficus, or hibiscus plants for coverage and hydration. Include horizontal and vertical branches at varying heights.

Temperature & Humidity

Basking spot: 85°F–90°F. Ambient: 75°F–82°F. Cool zone: 70°F–75°F. Nighttime drop to 60°F–65°F is beneficial. Humidity: 50%–70%. Mist 2–3 times daily with an automatic mister or by hand. Chameleons drink droplets from leaves — they will NOT drink from a standing water dish. UVB lighting (T5 HO 5.0 or 6%) is essential.

Common Mistakes

Glass enclosure (insufficient airflow). Standing water dish (chameleons won't drink from it). Over-handling. Incorrect humidity. Not gut-loading feeders. Missing UVB.

Things to Know Before Buying

Chameleons are high-maintenance animals. They require precise humidity, airflow, and UV levels. They are stress-sensitive and not ideal for heavy handling. Research thoroughly before purchasing.
