Overview
Green Tree Pythons (Morelia viridis) are a non-venomous arboreal python species native to New Guinea, Indonesia, and Cape York Peninsula in Australia. They are renowned for their brilliant emerald green coloration (adults), striking yellow or blue juvenile phase, and their iconic 'saddle' resting posture draped over horizontal branches. GTPs are display animals first and foremost — they are nippy and not particularly handleable, but are considered one of the most beautiful snakes in the hobby. With proper care they live 15–20 years.
Personality & Qualities
Green Tree Pythons are nippy, especially juveniles and feeding-response strikes are common. They are not a 'handling' snake — they are best enjoyed as display animals. Some adults mellow with age but most remain defensive. Hook training before handling is strongly recommended.
Daily Care
Monitor temperatures and humidity. Mist daily. Check that the snake is perched normally. Feed on schedule. Do not disturb during and immediately after feeding.
Diet
Feed pre-killed or frozen-thawed rodents appropriate to the snake's girth: • Juveniles: pinky/fuzzy mice every 5–7 days • Sub-adults: hoppers/weanlings every 7–10 days • Adults: adult mice or small rats every 10–14 days Use feeding tongs — never hand-feed. GTPs are ambush predators with a strong feeding response. ❌ AVOID: live prey (injury risk), overfeeding (leads to obesity).
Housing Requirements
Adults require a minimum 36x24x36 inch arboreal enclosure. Provide multiple horizontal perches at varying heights — GTPs spend virtually all their time perched. Include a water dish for soaking, a hide at the bottom, and live or artificial plants for coverage. PVC or glass enclosures with front-opening doors are ideal.
Temperature & Humidity
Basking spot: 88°F–92°F (under a radiant heat panel above the perch). Ambient: 80°F–85°F. Cool side: 75°F–78°F. Nighttime drop to 72°F–75°F. Humidity: 70%–90%. Mist daily. A large water dish aids ambient humidity. A humid hide at the bottom is recommended. UVB (T5 HO 5.0) is beneficial though not strictly required if feeding a varied diet.
Common Mistakes
Insufficient horizontal perches. Humidity too low (leads to stuck sheds). Handling too frequently. Hand-feeding (bite risk). Temperatures outside optimal range. Underestimating defensive nature.

Things to Know Before Buying
GTPs are a display-first animal and not suitable for those seeking a handleable pet snake. They require precise humidity and temperature. They are nippy and will bite. Research thoroughly — they are an advanced-level species.
