Overview

Amazon Milk Frogs (Trachycephalus resinifictrix) are a large arboreal frog species native to the Amazon Basin in South America. They are named for the toxic, milky white secretion they produce when stressed. Despite this defense mechanism, they are popular in the hobby for their bold grey, white, and brown banding pattern, their large size (2.5–4 inches), and their relatively docile nature. Juveniles display more vivid banding that softens with age. With proper care they live 8–15 years.

Personality & Qualities

Amazon Milk Frogs are docile and generally tolerant of handling compared to many frog species. They are nocturnal and most active at night. They are vocal — males will call loudly, especially at night. They can be kept in small groups which adds to the appeal.

Daily Care

Mist once or twice daily. Refresh water dish regularly. Feed on schedule with dusted insects. Spot-clean substrate. Handle minimally and always with clean, damp, chemical-free hands.

Diet

Amazon Milk Frogs eat live insects: • Staple: dubia roaches, crickets • Treats: hornworms, waxworms (sparingly), mealworms • Adults can eat nightcrawlers and occasional pinky mice (sparingly) Dust feeders with calcium + D3 and a multivitamin at every other feeding. Feed juveniles daily; adults every 2–3 days. ❌ AVOID: wild-caught insects (pesticide risk), overfeeding waxworms/pinkies (obesity risk).

Housing Requirements

Adults require a minimum 18x18x24 inch tall (arboreal) enclosure. Provide large diameter branches and cork bark perches — milk frogs are heavy bodied and need sturdy perches. Include live or artificial plants for coverage and a large water dish for soaking. Coconut fiber or bioactive substrate works well. Partial ventilation is fine.

Temperature & Humidity

Temperature: 75°F–85°F during the day. Nighttime drop to 68°F–72°F is fine and beneficial. Humidity: 60%–80%. Mist the enclosure once or twice daily. Allow partial drying between mistings.

Common Mistakes

Insufficient perch diameter (too thin for their weight). Over-misting without drying periods. Wild-caught feeders. Handling with dry or chemically treated hands. Mixing with differently-sized individuals.
