Overview

Uromastyx are near-desert dwelling lizards native to arid regions of Africa and the Middle East. They are known for their distinctive spiky tails, hardy nature, and fully herbivorous diet. With consistent handling, they become quite docile and make excellent reptile companions for beginners and experienced keepers alike.

Personality & Qualities

Uromastyx are generally calm and tolerate handling well. Consistent interaction from a young age helps ensure they remain docile. Younger animals may be more skittish but typically settle down with regular gentle handling. They are curious lizards that enjoy exploring their environment.

Daily Care

Offer fresh dark leafy greens daily. Check basking and ambient temperatures. Spot-clean the enclosure as needed. Provide a weekly 15–20 minute lukewarm soak for hydration and shedding. Inspect nails every 8 weeks and trim if overgrown.

Diet

Uromastyx are fully herbivorous. Fresh dark leafy greens should be offered daily at all life stages, including: Kale, Collard Greens, Mustard Greens, Dandelion Greens, and Okra. Fruits and vegetables can be offered as treats 1–2 times per week and include: Watermelon, Mango, Pineapple, Cherries, Grapes, Apples, Bananas, Carrots, and Bell Peppers. While a small water dish should be provided, Uromastyx get most of their water from the greens and fruit they eat. Dietary supplements are required: • Calcium (without D3): dust food 2–3 times per week • Calcium/Multivitamin (with D3): dust food twice per month

Housing Requirements

Juvenile Uromastyx can be kept in a 20-gallon long aquarium/terrarium. Adults require at minimum a 40-gallon breeder aquarium/terrarium, or larger such as a custom 4ft x 2ft x 2ft enclosure. Enclosure should include branches, faux rocks, and hammocks to allow easier access to the basking area and provide enrichment. A small water dish should be provided — a smaller dish helps keep humidity low. Safe substrate options include: • Paper Towel • Repti Carpet • Reptisand • Rabbit Food (adult Uromastyx only)

Temperature & Humidity

Uromastyx require full-spectrum lighting (UVA, UVB) and a strong basking heat source. • Basking spot: 120°F – 130°F • Warm side: 95°F – 100°F • Cool side: 80°F – 85°F • Nighttime drop: ~70°F (never below 65°F) Humidity: 30%–40%. These are near-desert lizards and do not require high humidity.

Common Mistakes

• Incorrect temperatures — basking must reach 120–130°F or the lizard cannot properly digest food • High humidity — keeping humidity above 40% can cause respiratory issues • Not providing enough variety in greens — Uromastyx can become picky eaters; rotate through multiple greens and treats • Skipping supplements — calcium and multivitamins are essential at all life stages • Handling young Uromastyx too long — juveniles lose body heat quickly; keep handling sessions shorter

Things to Know Before Buying

Uromastyx are a great beginner reptile but do require proper heating equipment to thrive. Ensure you have a high-output basking bulb capable of reaching 120–130°F before bringing your Uromastyx home. They are fully herbivorous, making feeding straightforward and affordable. With regular handling they become very tame and interactive pets.
