Overview

The Four-Eyed Opossum (Philander opossum) is found throughout Central and South America. Despite its name, it only has two eyes—the pale markings above them help deter predators. These agile climbers are highly adaptable in the wild and spend much of their time foraging for food at night.

Personality & Qualities

Four-eyed opossums are intelligent, curious, and energetic. They enjoy exploring their environment and can become comfortable with routine interaction. However, they are not typically cuddly pets and often prefer independent exploration over prolonged handling.

Daily Care

Fresh food and water should be provided daily. Enclosures should be spot-cleaned regularly and fully cleaned as needed. These animals benefit from enrichment such as climbing branches, hammocks, tunnels, puzzle feeders, and rotating toys.

Diet

A balanced diet should include: High-quality omnivore diet Insects such as crickets, mealworms, and roaches Lean cooked poultry Small amounts of fruits Vegetables Occasional eggs Avoid excessive sugary fruits, processed foods, and fatty treats.

Housing Requirements

A large, secure enclosure with significant vertical space is essential. Include: Multiple climbing branches Shelves and platforms Hammocks or sleeping pouches Nest boxes Safe enrichment items Secure locks to prevent escapes Because they are excellent climbers, height is especially important.

Temperature & Humidity

Temperature: 72–82°F Humidity: 50–70% Maintain stable environmental conditions and avoid drafts.

Common Mistakes

Underestimating their activity level Providing inadequate climbing space Housing multiple adults together Lack of enrichment Feeding an imbalanced diet heavy in fruit

Vet Care Recommendations

Annual wellness exams with an experienced exotic animal veterinarian are recommended. Monitor for obesity, nutritional deficiencies, respiratory illness, injuries, and dental issues. Any changes in appetite, activity level, or behavior should be evaluated promptly.

Things to Know Before Buying

Four-eyed opossums are best suited for experienced exotic pet owners who can provide ample space, enrichment, and specialized care. Their nocturnal habits mean they are most active during evening and nighttime hours. Always verify state and local regulations before acquiring one.
