Overview
The Leachianus Gecko (Rhacodactylus leachianus) is the largest living gecko species in the world. Found throughout New Caledonia, these arboreal reptiles spend much of their time climbing, hiding in tree hollows, and foraging at night. Their unique bark-like appearance provides excellent camouflage in their natural habitat.
Personality & Qualities
Leachie Geckos are known for being bold, intelligent, and highly individual in temperament. Some become calm and tolerant of handling, while others remain defensive throughout their lives. They are also famous for their vocalizations, including growls, barks, and chirps.
Daily Care
Fresh water should always be available. Food should be offered several times per week depending on age. Spot-clean waste daily and perform deeper enclosure maintenance regularly. Monitor temperature and humidity levels consistently to maintain proper health.
Diet
A balanced diet should include: Commercial crested gecko diet (CGD) Insects such as crickets and dubia roaches Occasional fruit-based treats Calcium and vitamin supplementation as needed Juveniles generally require more frequent feeding than adults.
Housing Requirements
Leachies require spacious vertical enclosures with plenty of climbing structures. Recommended setup includes: Minimum 24" x 24" x 36" enclosure for adults Cork bark tubes and branches Multiple hiding areas Live or artificial plants Secure screen ventilation Water dish and misting system Larger enclosures are always beneficial for adult animals.
Temperature & Humidity
Temperature: 72–78°F Nighttime Temperature: 68–74°F Humidity: 60–80% Daily misting recommended Avoid temperatures above 82°F for prolonged periods, as overheating can be dangerous.
Common Mistakes
Housing multiple adults together Allowing temperatures to become too hot Insufficient humidity Providing too little climbing space Overhandling defensive individuals Feeding only insects without a balanced gecko diet
Vet Care Recommendations
Annual wellness exams with an exotic veterinarian are recommended. Monitor for shedding issues, dehydration, weight loss, mouth infections, and metabolic bone disease. Seek veterinary care promptly if appetite changes significantly or unusual behavior develops.
