Day Gecko

Day Geckos are brightly colored, active reptiles known for their vibrant green bodies, striking red or blue markings, and daytime activity. Unlike many geckos, they are active during the day, making them excellent display animals for reptile enthusiasts.

Overview

Day Geckos belong to the Phelsuma genus and are native to Madagascar and nearby islands. Their bright coloration and active nature make them some of the most visually appealing geckos in the reptile hobby. Unlike nocturnal geckos, they spend their days climbing, basking, and hunting for food.

Personality & Qualities

Day Geckos are alert, energetic, and highly active. While fascinating to observe, they are not typically considered handling pets. Their delicate skin can be damaged if handled improperly, and they may drop patches of skin when stressed.

Daily Care

Provide fresh water daily and mist the enclosure to maintain humidity. Remove waste as needed and monitor temperatures and humidity levels closely. Offer food according to age and activity level.

Diet

A balanced diet should include: Commercial gecko diet (CGD) Crickets Dubia roaches Fruit flies (for juveniles) Occasional waxworms as treats Calcium and vitamin supplementation Many Day Geckos also enjoy fruit-based gecko diets and nectar-style foods.

Housing Requirements

Day Geckos thrive in vertically oriented enclosures. Recommended setup includes: Minimum 18" x 18" x 24" enclosure for smaller species Larger enclosures for giant day geckos Bamboo, branches, and climbing structures Live or artificial plants Multiple hiding spots Proper UVB lighting Naturalistic bioactive setups work exceptionally well for this species.

Temperature & Humidity

Daytime Temperature: 75–85°F Basking Area: 85–90°F Nighttime Temperature: 70–75°F Humidity: 60–80% Daily misting is recommended to maintain proper hydration and humidity levels.

Common Mistakes

Excessive handling Insufficient humidity Lack of UVB lighting Housing multiple territorial adults together Poor ventilation Feeding insects without proper supplementation

Vet Care Recommendations

Annual wellness exams with an exotic veterinarian are recommended. Monitor for shedding issues, dehydration, metabolic bone disease, and respiratory infections. Seek veterinary care if appetite decreases significantly or unusual lethargy develops.

Things to Know Before Buying

Day Geckos are ideal for keepers who enjoy observing active reptiles rather than handling them frequently. Their bright colors and daytime activity make them excellent display animals, but they require proper humidity, lighting, and enclosure design to thrive.
