Overview

King Snakes (Lampropeltis species) are native to North and Central America and are famous for their adaptability and resilience. In the wild, they inhabit a variety of environments including forests, grasslands, deserts, and rocky areas. Their name comes from their ability to prey on other snakes, including venomous species.

Personality & Qualities

King Snakes are curious, active, and generally easy to handle. Juveniles may be a bit more energetic and defensive, but most become calm and confident with regular interaction. They are excellent display animals and often spend time exploring their enclosure.

Daily Care

Provide fresh water at all times and check temperatures daily. Spot-clean waste as needed and perform regular enclosure maintenance. Observe your snake for healthy feeding, shedding, and activity levels.

Diet

A healthy King Snake diet consists of: Frozen-thawed mice Small rats for larger adults Hatchlings typically start on pinky mice Feeding schedule: Hatchlings: Every 5–7 days Juveniles: Every 7–10 days Adults: Every 10–14 days Frozen-thawed prey is recommended for safety.

Housing Requirements

King Snakes require a secure enclosure due to their reputation as excellent escape artists. Recommended setup includes: 20-gallon enclosure for juveniles 40-gallon breeder or larger for adults Secure locking lid Warm and cool side hides Climbing branches and enrichment Aspen bedding or reptile-safe substrate Water dish large enough for soaking

Temperature & Humidity

Warm Side: 82–86°F Cool Side: 72–78°F Basking Area: 88–90°F Humidity: 40–60% Slightly increase humidity during shedding if necessary.

Common Mistakes

Housing multiple snakes together Providing insecure enclosures Feeding prey that is too large Improper temperature gradients Handling immediately after feeding Neglecting humidity during shedding

Vet Care Recommendations

Annual wellness exams with an exotic veterinarian are recommended. Monitor for respiratory infections, mites, shedding issues, mouth rot, and abnormal weight loss. Any prolonged refusal to eat or unusual behavior should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
