Overview
The Chahoua Gecko (Mniarogekko chahoua), often called the Mossy Gecko, is native to New Caledonia. Their mottled green, brown, and gray coloration allows them to blend seamlessly into tree bark and moss-covered branches. These geckos are nocturnal and spend much of their time climbing and hiding among vegetation.
Personality & Qualities
Chahoua Geckos are known for being calmer and more tolerant of handling than many other gecko species. While individual personalities vary, many become comfortable with routine interaction. Their unique appearance and curious nature make them excellent display animals.
Daily Care
Provide fresh water daily and mist the enclosure regularly to maintain humidity. Remove waste as needed and monitor environmental conditions closely. Offer food several times per week and observe feeding habits regularly.
Diet
A healthy diet should include: Commercial crested gecko diet (CGD) Crickets Dubia roaches Black soldier fly larvae Occasional hornworms Calcium and vitamin supplementation Many Chahoua Geckos readily accept fruit-based gecko diets as their primary food source.
Housing Requirements
A vertically oriented enclosure is ideal. Recommended setup includes: Minimum 18" x 18" x 24" enclosure for adults Cork bark tubes and branches Live or artificial plants Multiple hiding spots Secure ventilation Water dish Bioactive setups are often highly successful Larger enclosures allow for more natural behaviors and enrichment.
Temperature & Humidity
Daytime Temperature: 72–78°F Nighttime Temperature: 68–74°F Humidity: 60–80% Mist daily and allow the enclosure to partially dry between misting sessions.
Common Mistakes
Allowing temperatures to become too hot Insufficient humidity Inadequate climbing opportunities Overhandling stressed individuals Feeding only insects without a balanced gecko diet Housing incompatible adults together
Vet Care Recommendations
Annual wellness exams with an exotic veterinarian are recommended. Monitor for shedding issues, dehydration, metabolic bone disease, respiratory infections, and weight loss. Seek veterinary care if appetite changes significantly or unusual behavior develops.
