Tree Monitors (Varanus species such as Green Tree Monitors, Blue Tree Monitors, and Black Tree Monitors) are native to New Guinea and surrounding islands. Unlike many monitor lizards, Tree Monitors spend much of their lives in trees, using their long tails and sharp claws to navigate branches with ease. They are among the most intelligent and visually stunning reptiles available in captivity.
Personality & Qualities
Tree Monitors are alert, inquisitive, and highly intelligent. While they may initially be shy, many become surprisingly interactive with consistent, positive interactions. They are constantly exploring their surroundings and require significant mental stimulation to thrive.
Daily Care
Provide fresh water daily and monitor temperatures and humidity closely. Spot-clean waste regularly and maintain a clean enclosure. Tree Monitors benefit greatly from environmental enrichment, climbing opportunities, and varied feeding routines.
Diet
A healthy Tree Monitor diet should include: Dubia roaches Crickets Silkworms Hornworms Superworms Freshwater shrimp Quail eggs Small rodents occasionally Other appropriately sized prey items Calcium and vitamin supplementation should be provided regularly. A varied diet is essential for proper health and nutrition.
Housing Requirements
Tree Monitors require large, vertically oriented enclosures. Recommended setup includes: Minimum adult enclosure: 6' x 3' x 6' Larger enclosures strongly encouraged Extensive climbing branches Elevated basking platforms Dense live or artificial plants Multiple elevated hides Strong ventilation Secure locking enclosure Height is one of the most important aspects of a Tree Monitor habitat.
Temperature & Humidity
Ambient Temperature: 78–88°F Warm Side: 88–95°F Basking Surface: 110–130°F Humidity: 70–90% Daily misting and proper ventilation are essential for maintaining healthy humidity levels.
Common Mistakes
Providing enclosures that are too small Insufficient climbing opportunities Low humidity Poor ventilation Lack of enrichment Feeding an unbalanced diet Underestimating their intelligence and activity level
Vet Care Recommendations
Annual wellness examinations with an experienced exotic veterinarian are strongly recommended. Monitor for respiratory infections, parasites, dehydration, shedding issues, metabolic bone disease, and injuries. Routine fecal examinations are beneficial for long-term health.
