Overview

The Black Throat Monitor (Varanus albigularis ionidesi) is native to East Africa and is a subspecies of the Rock Monitor. These giant lizards can reach lengths of 5–7 feet and weigh over 50 pounds. Despite their intimidating appearance, captive-bred Black Throat Monitors are often known for their calm and inquisitive personalities when properly socialized.

Personality & Qualities

Black Throat Monitors are highly intelligent, observant, and food-motivated. Many become remarkably tame and learn to recognize their caretakers. They are often considered one of the calmer large monitor species, though their immense strength means they should always be handled responsibly.

Daily Care

Fresh water should always be available. Monitor temperatures and humidity daily and clean waste regularly. These monitors benefit from enrichment, digging opportunities, supervised exploration, and interaction with experienced keepers.

Diet

A healthy Black Throat Monitor diet should include: Dubia roaches Crickets Superworms Hornworms Quail eggs Shrimp Crayfish Lean poultry occasionally Rodents in moderation Calcium and vitamin supplementation should be provided regularly. Avoid feeding excessive rodents, as obesity is a common issue in captive Black Throat Monitors.

Housing Requirements

Black Throat Monitors require very large custom-built enclosures. Recommended setup includes: Minimum adult enclosure: 10' x 6' x 6' Larger enclosures strongly encouraged Deep substrate (12–24 inches) for digging Large basking platform Multiple hides Heavy-duty climbing structures Large water basin Secure locking enclosure Because of their size and strength, enclosures must be built from durable materials.

Temperature & Humidity

Ambient Temperature: 80–90°F Warm Side: 90–95°F Basking Surface: 120–140°F Humidity: 50–70% Proper humidity helps support healthy shedding and respiratory function.

Common Mistakes

Underestimating adult size Housing in enclosures that are too small Feeding too many rodents Inadequate basking temperatures Lack of enrichment Insufficient substrate depth Purchasing without planning for long-term housing needs

Vet Care Recommendations

Annual wellness exams with an experienced exotic veterinarian are highly recommended. Monitor for obesity, metabolic bone disease, respiratory infections, parasites, shedding issues, and injuries. Routine fecal testing can help identify health concerns early.

Things to Know Before Buying

Black Throat Monitors are among the largest pet lizards available and require a tremendous commitment of space, time, and financial resources. While they can become rewarding companions for experienced keepers, they are not suitable for beginners. Prospective owners should ensure they can provide appropriate housing and veterinary care for a reptile that may live for decades.
